The Capital Hip Hop Soul Fest

By Farrah Chataigne
Washington DC has an interesting musical history. The city has birthed an influential array of talented musicians in every genre, and even created its own, known as Go-Go. However, the genre of Hip-Hop in DC has yet to reach its plateau. The 1990s ushered in an expansion of the sound that has only been increasing. And with rappers like Wale and Rosetta Stoned receiving national attention, DC’s mainstream season is eminent.
If you happen to be in the nation’s capitol this weekend, support the DC hip- hop movement by attending the Capital Hip-Hop Soul Fest on Saturday July 26 from 11 am – 8 pm. The Capital Hip-Hop Soul Fest will take place in Marvin Gaye Park, once known as The Watts-Branch Park. The park was renamed after musical legend, Marvin Gaye, who was raised in the Dean Wood community. Located at Division Avenue and Foote Street in Northeast, Washington. D.C., the festival will showcase hip-hop and soul acts from the metropolitan DC area. This event will include artists like the soul-rock band Uninterrupted, vocalists Dee Stone and Chaquis Maliq, and hip-hop artists Substantial and Cool Cee Brown.
Liberated Muse Production (LMP), a DC-based upbeat, event-planning group is hosting the event in hopes that this will familiarize audiences with local metropolitan artists. The festival will also create a venue for DC-based small businesses and nonprofits to advertise their services. The event is packed with all types of fun events for the whole family and over 20 performing local artists. Grab your friends and family, pack a lunch, and spend an evening with the sights and sounds that is your community. The DC area is rich in culture and history and this event not only promotes the significance of the music in our past, but also encourages the “history in the making” that is our musical future. The event is free and metro–accessible.
